Winter things to do in Wanaka

Of all the things to do in Wanaka winters, the skiing and boarding are legendary. This picturesque ski town, serving three ski fields is arguably the best place to ski in New Zealand. One of the best things to do in Wanaka winters for families is to visit Cardrona, which this year opens its wide pistes between 24 June and 10 October. Cardrona is the most popular ski field . Treble Cone, the largest ski area in the South Island is steep, breathtakingly beautiful and uncrowded and definitely top of the things to do in Wanaka list for experienced skiers. Wairou Snow Farm offers Nordic skiing - one of those things to do in Wanaka which shouldn't be missed. Their terrain park, also high on a plateau wilderness is excellent. Walking / tramping is world class with trails for every ability in both Wanaka and the nearby Mt Aspiring National Park. A rewarding walk to the top of Roy’s Peak (1587m) commences just six kilometres from town, with stunning alpine panoramas rewarding those who brave the three hour ascent.

Scenic flights, tandem skydiving from 15,000 feet, heli-sightseeing, helicopter fishing, tandem paragliding (parapenting), Warbirds museum, and flights in a Czech albatross jet fighter. Pick of the bunch is the scenic flight to Milford Sound: departing from Wanaka airport after breakfast , this flight literally passes through true "Lord of the Rings" scenery prior to landing at Milford Sound. The fiord cruise is stunning and the return flight to Wanaka will have you home in time for dinner.
